Delivery: Blended (work-based + online learning)
Typical duration: 9–12 months (dependent on placement hours across age ranges 0–5)
Entry: Age 16+, DBS, employed/placed in an Early Years setting

Block A — Early Years principles & frameworks

  • EY-specific legislation (EYFS), ratios, supervision, key person role
    Outcomes: Compliant practice aligned to EYFS

Block B — Child development (0–5) & observation

  • Developmental milestones; observation methods; learning journeys
    Outcomes: High-quality observations informing next steps

Block C — Planning, play & the learning environment

  • Enabling environments, indoor/outdoor learning, play theory
  • Inclusive/adaptive planning; cultural capital
    Outcomes: Weekly plans and enhancements with impact notes

Block D — Safeguarding, H&S & first aid awareness

  • Early Years safeguarding; safer sleeping; accidents & incident reporting
    Outcomes: Accurate logs; timely escalation to DSL

Block E — Communication, language & literacy

  • Adult-child interaction quality; early literacy/numeracy foundations
    Outcomes: Interaction audits; speech & language support strategies

Block F — SEND & partnership with parents/carers

  • Graduated approach (Assess-Plan-Do-Review), multi-agency working
    Outcomes: SEN support plans; reviews with parent voice

Block G — Professionalism, EDI & CPD

  • Reflective practice, supervision, wellbeing, workload management
    Outcomes: CPD plan; reflective account evidencing change in practice

Assessment methods

  • Observed practice across routines (care, play, small-group)
  • Planned activity pack with evaluation and photos (with consent)
  • Reflective accounts (e.g., enabling environment, parent partnership)
  • Knowledge tasks mapped to EYFS and safeguarding
  • Work products (planning cycles, risk assessments, SEND plans)

Placement coverage (guide)

  • Evidence across all EYFS areas and age bands 0–5
  • Include mealtimes, toileting, nappy care, sleep, outdoor provision

Support & quality assurance

  • Individual assessor; progress reviews each half-term; e-portfolio
  • Internal quality assurance; readiness checks for completion

Delivery plan (both diplomas)

Induction (Week 0): Policies, e-portfolio set-up, initial assessment
Core teaching (Weeks 1–20): Weekly online workshops + workplace tasks
Assessment windows (Weeks 6, 12, 18): Observations & evidence checks
Consolidation (Weeks 21–24): Gap-fill, final observation, sign-off

What learners receive: Tutor support, assessment plan, workshop calendar, e-portfolio access and feedback cycle
